First Aid for Young Children

The hazards encountered by young children differ from those the rest of us experience. When one of these hazards becomes a first aid emergency, a small child cannot communicate their concerns and their treatment may even be different because of their age, size, or development.

This course covers essentials of life-saving and common first aid emergencies among children up to the age of 6 years. On completion of the course you will be able to identify and safely manage: CPR Choking Reduced level of consciousness Fractures Severe bleeding Seizures Breathing difficulties Anaphylaxis Poisoning Burns.

In addition you will become familiar with treatment and support providers (Ambulance, Healthline, Poison Centre, and Doctor) and be able to summon the assistance appropriate to your situation. Who would benefit from First Aid for Young Children? Day-care staff, parents, babysitters, caregivers, ECE providers – anyone who provides care for young children in their work environment or day-to-day life. . Course information: Duration: 4 hours Outcomes: First Aid for Young Children certificate valid for 2 years from time of issue. Pre requisite: None  Purpose: Is for people who have responsibility for young children, including those who provide home-based education and care services for young children. People credited with this unit standard are able to provide first aid for young children For the purposes of this unit standard , "young children" are those under the compulsory schooling age of six years (Education Act 1989).
